In a flavorful tribute to the Windy City, Portillo’s has unveiled The Leo — a new Italian beef sandwich honoring Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope.

Announced this week, the sandwich features Portillo’s signature Italian beef, dunked in savory gravy and topped with your choice of sweet peppers, hot peppers, or a mix of both — the so-called “holy trinity” of toppings.

Portillo’s spokesperson stated, “It’s our original sacred sandwich, bold, unapologetically flavorful, and made in honor of a moment that’s historic for Portillo’s hometown.” Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago on September 14, 1955, previously taught at St. Rita of Cascia High School and earned his divinity degree at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park.

Founded in 1963, Portillo’s has become synonymous with Chicago-style cuisine, specializing in hot dogs and Italian beef. The Leo is available at all locations, online, and via kiosks for May and will be officially Italian Beef Month starting at $8.29.

As the restaurant confirmed on social media, “Yes, you can order this.” If food is your religion, consider this your call to worship. The Leo is a limited-time tribute to Chicago pride and flavor — but don’t wait too long, it’s only available through the end of the month.
